In Rome, it is illegal to keep a goldfish in a bowl
Goldfish bowls are inhumane as they do not provide the fish with even the most basic of its needs (well.. apart from water).  A bowl is simply too small to support any fish at all. Oxygen cannot dissolve properly into the water due to lack of water movement. As a result, the fish can often be seen near the surface gulping (unlike betta fish, they do not have a labyrinth organ and atmospheric oxygen will harm them). Even if you install an airstone, other things such as water quality and space are not resolved.
Proper filtration cannot be installed in a bowl. Goldfish produce copious amounts of waste which quickly pollutes the water. Even if the water is changed frequently (which is harmful for the fish anyway), a bowl is still unable to support a proper biological function (i.e. bacteria breaking stuff down).
Goldfish are very active swimmers and do need quite a lot of space. A bowl is simply not big enough. They do grow rather big but do not in a small area as their growth is stunted (hence the myth that fish only grow as big as their environment)
